Chelsea is a municipality located
immediately north of Ottawa, Canada about a 15 minute
drive from Canada's Parliament Hill. Chelsea is a rural
community that it's population actively protects and
enhances. In 2001 the population was 6036 at that time
there were 700 children enrolled in Soccer Chelsea.
The
municipality has won numerous awards for it's environmental
initiatives and was one of the first in Canada to ban
the use of pesticides. Much of the municipality is residential
with one-acre or larger lots giving the area a distinctly
rural feel.
The Municipality of Chelsea includes
much of the southern and eastern parts of the Gatineau
Park while the Gatineau River runs along it's eastern
boarder. Chelsea boasts many lakes including Meech Lake,
of the Meech Lake Accord and Kingsmere Lake famous as
the summer home of MacKenzie King and Beamish Lake as
well as numerous beaver ponds. When the winter starts
with cold, snowless days these water ways are full of
pick-up hockey players.
Chelsea is a mecca for the outdoor
sportsperson and has miles of bike, walking and ski
paths - most of which are fully maintained by the National
Capital Commission or the Municipality. As well, there
are three golf courses within it's boundaries, three
tennis court areas, a sailing club, paddling club and
two ski clubs - alpine and nordic, a weight training
facility, physiotherapy clinic and innumerable soccer
pitches.
The population of Chelsea is
almost evenly divided between anglophones and francophones
with both languages used interchangeably throughout
the town and at town meetings. There is both an English
and French elementary school as well as a French Montesory
school, French Montesory Pre-school and English Co-op
Pre-school with French language studies.
